How to treat teeth sensitivity?

Ans.Having sensitivity in the tooth is pretty common problem. Teeth sensitivity and dentine hypersensitivity is actually can actually cause lot of pain and discomfort in the teeth, in response to certain stimuli such as cold or hot, sweet or sour etc. This happens due to demineralization of enamel and opening of dentine tubules.

Sensitivity to cold is very common and it could also be due to receding gums. If teeth are sensitive to heat, it is more of serious concern. If sensitivity lasts for more than four to five days and react to both the stimuli, i.e. hot and cold temperature, it is best to consult your dentist to take closure look. Sometimes it is the sign of cavity/decay or infected tooth pulp.

Once the dentist has identified the cause of sensitivity, he may prescribe the following for relief:

  • Tooth paste for sensitive teeth, as they have desensitizing properties.
  • Fluoride gel that helps to strengthen the teeth enamel and reduce pain.
  • Bonding resin, which will desensitize the exposed root by the agents.
  • Surgical gum graft is helpful in case of receding gums.
  • Root canal therapy in severe cases.
  • Sealant that will cover the dentine tubules.
  • Mouth guard to protect from the night grinding and clenching.
  • Alcohol free mouthwash.
  • Advise to use soft bristle brush and brush gently.
  • Dental varnish to seal the ends of the teeth.

Home remedies for sensitivity:

  • Clove oil and clove are analgesic and anti-inflammatory, can numb the area and relief the pain temporarily.
  • Rinse you mouth with salt water.
  • Avoid food and drinks that causes sensitivity or increase it.

Please note these home remedies are for time being and help while waiting for dental appointment.
