It refers to a condition caused by a fungus from the candida family that develops an infection of the mouth, nails, skin, and at times other organs.

• Oral Thrush
• Thrush lesions in the esophagus, causes pain and difficulty swallowing
• Lesions on the larynx, causing hoarse voice
• Fingernails and toenails – painful, reddened, and tense swelling at the base or along the sides
• Reddened, irritated areas seen under the arms, groin, breasts, vagina.These areas are often itchy and uncomfortable
• Hard and horn-like lesions with a reddened base, on the skin, scalp, and trunk
• In very rare occasions infection of deeper organs or in the blood.

• Examination under a microscope shows the presence of candida
• Blood samples

Topical therapy, including clotrimazole troches or nystatin, oral fluconazole is as effective. Itraconazole, Ketoconazole are less effective than fluconazole

For effective treatment of esophageal candidiasis a 14-21-day course of either fluconazole or itraconazole solution is highly effective.

Caspofungin and voriconazole are effective in treating esophageal candidiasis among HIV-1-infected patients, fluconazole remains the preferred agent.

Uncomplicated vaginal infection is treated with:

• Topical clotrimazole for 3-7 days
• Topical nystatin
• Oral Itraconazole
• Oral fluconazole 1 dose.
